Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Indonesia is one of the lead ASEAN Member States to advance WPS agenda in the ASEAN region, particularly around issues of conflict prevention, peace mediation and negotiation including counter-terrorism (CT) and prevention of violent extremism (PVE), women in peacekeeping operation among others.

Under the UN Women Indonesia SN-AWP , governance and WPS is one of the programme priorities funded by various donors.

It is also fully aligned with Indonesia UNSCDF and contributes directly to the 'Peace Hub' joint programming initiative of UNODC, UNDP and UN Women under the leadership of the UNRC office.

The Indonesia CO is currently implementing country-level components of the programme "Empowering women for sustainable peace: preventing violence and promoting social cohesion in ASEAN" (Advancing WPS in ASEAN), funded by Canada.

Key activities include support to advance the implementation of the WPS agenda by strengthening the capacity of a national and sub-national Task Force of RAN P3AKS, consultations and capacity building for community groups and leaders, government and CSO counterparts, and other activities supporting the synergy between policymakers and civil society for effective implementation of the WPS agenda in Indonesia.

Concurrently, UN Women is preparing to launch a three-year programme on "Empowered Women for Sustainable Peace," which will be implemented in Central Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Nusa Tenggara with a focus on promoting community resilience across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus using a gender-responsive and rights-based approach.
