Living In A Smoker's Paradise.

Living In A Smoker's Paradise.

Ok, I’m a smoker!

There, I said it!

I can almost hear the rustle of bees wings as they rush to the keyboard and frantically press the orange button, unfollow, unfollow, unfollow! Beware, a smoker is amongst us!

I am not altogether proud of my habit as I have been a hopeless addict for well over thirty years now. Management and my two daughters abhor tobacco smoke and when the girls were living at home and, even now, where its just management and I, I have had to virtually descend to the sewers to satisfy my pathetic cravings.

SMOKING

Oh, I have tried people, tried hard to quit the habit but, alas, all of my efforts have ended in abject failure. You name it, I’ve tried it; nicotine patches, chewing gum, hypnosis, vaping, how to stop smoking books as well as countless goes at cold turkey all to no avail.

My willpower you see is pathetic.

The thing is that, if I was still living in Australia I would have been forced to stop, for that country has (like many other things) draconian laws when it comes to smoking. There are virtually no public places where a smoker is able to light up, beaches, parks, anywhere inside a building, pedestrian malls or in the street for that matter.

SMOKING...

HELPS <<!

hud e- ag —{

A few years ago they introduced what is globally now known as plain packaging for all tobacco products. Now, when one purchases a packet from a tobacconist, supermarket or convenience store, the packs are locked behind a slate grey cabinet out of sight; I swear it’s probably easier to purchase explosives than it is to buy a pack of fags. Each pack now carries the name of the brand in a common typeface with no defining fonts or logos, in fact, there are no logos anymore. All sides of the packs are adorned with some of the most hideous pictures of human organs damaged by smoke and tar that should deter even the most addicted of smokers.

6c25ab72.jpg

Trouble is it really doesn’t!

Prices have increased on average by about 50% a year for the last ten years or so where now a packet of twenty cigarettes will cost the addict an eye-watering $35 a go! This I would have thought would have swayed even the most hardened smoker to quit but, reading the latest statistics on tobacco consumption apparently this is not the case.

The incidence of smoking among girls, 14 to 25 is higher now than what it was ten years ago. Cigarette brands are the top five highest selling items in the large supermarkets. In 2016 the government's tax take on tobacco was the highest its ever been at a whopping $9.8 Billion! This beats the tax on mining by nearly $8 billion which, when you think about it, is staggering.

accc7b05.jpg

The trouble is also that the Australian Government has, alas, become addicted to the revenue generated by the sale of tobacco. If every smoker suddenly quits tomorrow it would put a gigantic hole in the government’s coffers.

Six years ago management and I left the big land down under and resettled in Indonesia on the island of Bali. For a smoker, this would be like dying and then waking up thinking that you are in heaven.

Smoking in Indonesia is rampant and one seemingly can smoke anywhere. When I first arrived I opened a bank account and was welcomed into the local branch office by the manager who sat me down in his office and promptly offered me a cigarette. There we sat, we two, puffing away contentedly, chatting about how to invest my meagre funds!

Smoking here is rampant, egged on by the tobacco companies who decorate each and every outlet that sells their product. Sun awnings, umbrellas, elaborate display stands and all manner of colourful advertising materials festoon the convenience stores and roadside ‘warungs,’urging the public to light up and enjoy.

Billboards for several brands line the side of busy roads, cinema advertising for tobacco is rampant while every event one attends, sexy ‘cigarette girls’ wearing impossibly short skirts blazoned with the client’s logo, roam the crowds giving out free samples.

ee5cc619.jpg

Then, of course, there is the cost….. wait for it… just $1.90 a pack of twenty so for ex-pats like myself it is not a ‘hardship purchase’ Estimates put the smoking population here at a staggering 172 million which, any way you look at it says that there is a lot of smoking going on.

Lately, the government here has come to the realization that smoking is actually not that good for you and are beginning to introduce curbs to try and deter new smokers and encouraging smokers to quit. Packs now have strange pictures of people who I think are smoking on the front section, although looking at it closely it does sort of resemble a bald-headed man blowing bubbles.

9ea03e80.jpg

In January 2018 the cost of a pack of cigarettes will rise to $2.35 which is a massive increase when one considers that the average daily wage here is $3.

There have been attempts by restaurants and shopping centres to ban smoking on their premises but, like the French, Indonesians (and foreigners) largely ignore the signs.

For me, a smoker who is ‘dying’ to quit, Indonesia perhaps wasn’t really a wise move as really the lack of restrictions and the price has hardly helped with my pathetic efforts.

However, in the next couple of weeks, I am doing a lightning trip to Singapore where I will see a doctor and obtain a prescription to purchase the ‘magic pill’ Champix. I am told and my research has concurred that this drug will virtually guarantee that even the hardiest smokers will never light up again once the drug is ingested.

So cheer me on fellow bees, and watch this space for further updates.

Seems like you're in good company, Paul Walters, or bad company, depending on what sort of positive reinforcement you want. Sounds like your bank manager is the "good guy" right now. I never had a habit as much as a strategy. For years, I only smoked when I reached an impasse in my writing (you know how that happens in advertising). With books, the impasses were further apart, so it might only constitute 8 cigarettes a day. Once I stopped writing for the day, I never even thought about cigarettes. Last week, I stopped for good (shouldn't say that, should I?). What I was dealing with wasn't nicotine cravings. I simply didn't know how else to "take that break." I was used to going outside, lighting up, simplifying the problem and..bingo, bango, THE ANSWER!!! Check your habits. For many people that's what they have to traverse, not nicotine cravings. Oh, and I launched The Last Pack, smoking cessation system in 1990. We were all still smoking—including the client. I loved the Age of Hypocrites.

Great advise Lisa \ud83d\udc1d Gallagher 'dont admit youve quit until a good month or so passes because the pressure is that much stronger..' Like you, I vape with 0 nicotine now. But on my last (and bleedin' FINAL) quit I said to my hubby who stopped cold turkey 10 years prior, 'I'm NOT saying I quit for good again...I'm quitting TODAY'. That ball-busting 'promise' will not help you at all Paul Walters! IMHO you sorta have to sneak up on that puppy.........

I agree, e cigs are great and they dont burn so a person isnt in the habit of chronic puffing either. I get 0 nicotine, started much higher. Need to find a flavor that works for you too. I always keep it with me in case I get the strong urge to smoke and I still do get urges after 5 years!

Oh, I really wish you luck Paul Walters! I smoked for years. I began when there were no stigmas or major warnings. More people smoked tham didnt. I really wanted to quit in the worst way when I hit my 40's, but the addiction is much stronger than common sense. My Dr. compares a smoking addiction to crack. 5 years ago I developed pneumonia and I didnt crave or pick up a cigarette for over 2 weeks because I was so sick. I purchased vaping products, and began using them. It will be 5 years for me in December since I smoked. You've got this! One suggestion, dont admit youve quit until a good month or so passes because the pressure is that much stronger when you admit knowing it will please those you love. Once I was sure I wasnt going back to them I told my family. I really do wish you the best, I understand how hard it is!

Paul Walters there is a book by Allen Carr called "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking", (reminds me I need to pull it off the bookshelf), that actually helped me a couple of years ago and of all the books I've read on the subject , (yes there's been a few), I think this one is the best. Easy, straightforward read, try it in conjunction with anything else that you do. Good Luck Buddy, keep us posted

Thank you, Pak Paul, for your years of smoker’s contribution to our roads, infrastructure and hospitals here in Oz. Now, if you really must quit, then why not try pipe tobacco, but not in a pipe. If you roll your own with Dunhill 965 either your lungs will turn into a steamship or you’ll be cured for life. And there again there’s always the local Indo rokok kretek (clove cigarettes), affectionately called “goddam garam” by non-smoking foreigners ..... almost guaranteed to have the same effect.

If you are referring to Chantix have someone watch your behavior. I did this in one of my attempts and had very stressful dreams. Along with almost what u would call roid rage, much milder, but was easily provoked My wife bought me a cartoon Follow the instructions

Good for you, Paul, and good luck. How about a follow-up article on the growing danger of vape oils that are laced with nicotine, one of the most addictive substances known? Out children are being attacked by those selling this next global scourge.

Paul, I've got my fingers crossed for you. It took me years to quit and now, 30 years later I still get the urge. Good luck on a very difficult mission.

Well Bravo to you Paul Walters will be interested in this), the first thing your doctor is going to ask you is, "are you depressed? do you have suicidal tendencies? etc." Why? Because the Champix will give you the most intense, vivid dreams, absolutely wild which are very disconcerting for some people and if you're in a "negative" state of mind can make things worse. I have no problems with it and find it actually quite entertaining. I notice a decrease in craving as well but the bottom line is it's the psychological factor that will dictate whether you quit or not, yes "willpower", Champix is not "The silver bullet" but it can help, (I'm still smoking but less, I'm in a "re-group and re-organize" phase and will try again in earnest in a few weeks) Good luck Buddy! keep us posted

I'm rootin' for ya Paul Walters...Brutal habit to quit...I was a smoker for well over 30 years and quit cold turkey when my daughter was born...But that addictive behavior, like all others, never completely leaves you...I fell right back into it while dealing with the recent loss of my dad...a coping mechanism I had employed for many years to calm my nerves... Try as I might to stop the cravings...my inner 'voldemort' kept hissing at me with a big 'F Off' every time I tried to reason with it...It took getting violently ill recently to kick the habit once again...I hope you don't have to go there;-)

Dang, Paul Walters; hate to tell ya we're all gonna die!! Puff away - I do, on my vape - no nicotine now. My sister & BFF died from it 2005; not from her terminal NSCLC which was only diagnosed at stage 4, but because she fell asleep outside in the cold (having a fag; oxygen inside) during the night on my watch - I got to her 45 mins after, she got the final infection. After that I finally quit. We'd both done the Champix thing - it really works! Unless you start again. People judge on what they see (or smell). They should get the plank outta their own eye because we all fall short :)

Paul Walters Don’t stop! What will happen to the smoke signals from Bali? No more wafts of faraway places, no more lighting up our wanderlust, no more pipes of peace, no more re-buttals, no more intoxicating humor! Too dreadful too even think about.

Great buzz and introduces the paradox of governments asking people not to smoke; yet the government's revenues from selling cigarettes are a major source of revenues for them. "The trouble is also that the Australian Government has, alas, become addicted to the revenue generated by the sale of tobacco". We live in the world of paradoxes. Great reading Paul Walters. I am not unfollowing you
