Just When We Thought It Was All Don and Dusted.

( This article was written on 5th November 2020 but I am happy to report that it looks as though it the Don has been dusted )

It’s early morning in Indonesia. A shaft of brilliant sunlight spears through the foliage and spreads a halo of golden light across my newly created garden. A stooped woman of indeterminable age comes at this time each day to collect the Frangipani petals that have fallen from the trees overnight. Her stoic determination is always an inspiration to me as she diligently stuffs her oversized bag with the white and pink petals that will be dried and sold to the perfume manufacturers at a mere 70c a kilo.

Just When We Thought It Was All Don and Dusted.

I have sat up half the night watching the see-sawing results from an election taking place many, many thousands of miles away knowing that, whatever the outcome, the decisions made by the American voters will affect us here on this side of the planet. Although the ancient blossom collector will, in some way be unaffected by this closely fought race as I suspect she has no idea who Donald Trump is or indeed where America actually is.

This election, which has seen more people than ever before cast a  ballot in a country hopelessly divided but clinging to the democratic principals on which America was founded. However, this fiasco has dragged on long enough, and perhaps a change of government in America will apply a soothing balm to vicious wounds inflicted by both sides over the last four years.

06a5dcd7.jpg

As the nation and the rest of the world holds its collective breath while counting continues others are in their counting houses tallying up the billions and billions of dollars spent by either side desperate to either attain or hold onto the reins of power. Bankers, media companies, tech giants, polling companies, advisors and lawyers are drowning in obscene amounts of cash.

And when it is all over and the Trump/Pence and Biden/Harris bunting, flags and yard signs lie trampled underfoot will it all have been worth it? Will, the incumbent or the challenger wish his opponent well and disappear over the horizon to live out his years in comfortable retirement and trust the winner will do the ‘right thing’ and lead the country back from the abyss?

54d73d07.jpg

America and the world have been in this situation before most notably in the drawn-out election of 2000 when, after three long, arduous weeks the Supreme Court decided that the ‘hanging chad’ on some of the voting machines in Florida was enough to declare George Bush the winner over a gracious Al Gore. One would have thought that with technology and the current checks and balances, that this scenario would never transpire again.

How wrong we can be !!

The thing about winning and losing is, as Rudyard Kipling one said, “is to treat those two imposters just the same.” Winners need to be gracious when triumph comes their way for gloating over a defeated rival is bad form. Losers too have to accept their defeat with grace and acknowledge that a better opponent defeated them.

For the last eighteen years, I have come to understand losing watching my beloved rugby team succumb to a better side, often in heartbreaking, last-minute scenarios. But, we always we tell ourselves, “there is always next year.”

e32b651e.jpg

Unfortunately, I fear the sitting president will not be so gracious in defeat as the one thing he fears above all else is losing. Already he and his sycophants are crying foul even though there are still swathes of ballots to be counted. A torrent of tweets, written in capital letters to his eighty- four million followers flow endlessly into the ether that the election is being ‘stolen’ when in fact every measure has been taken to ensure that this was a free and fair election.

322ed164.jpg

I will be glad to see him and his rapacious family leave the White House for, all in all, it appears to have been a failed experiment. His Napoleonic, bombastic reign has caused much pain and suffering for the poor and disenfranchised while the rich cheered him on reveling in the massive gains on the stock market. However, there is only so much wool that can be pulled over the eyes of the electorate. The millions who voted for him in 2016 are finally seeing through the opaque smoke and mirrors that he so cleverly created during his term and taking a chance on electing the challenger.

6688f0e1.jpg

In a few weeks perhaps I can awaken each morning without having to rush to my computer to see what mischief the Commander in Chief has performed while I was sleeping. Maybe the environment will be able to take a deep breath knowing that the next occupant of the Oval Office will try to protect rather than exploit pristine swathes of wilderness from those intent on extracting that which is buried beneath. Perhaps America will resort to peaceful dialogue with its allies and adversaries without treating those summits as a forum to extract a favourable ‘deal’ as if it were a dubious real estate transaction. Maybe the deep divisions within the American community will heal.

One can only hope.

f368410b.jpg

Posts such as this one might be annoying to my many American readers as, who am I to criticize how America goes about their business and how dare I cast dispersions on their sitting president? I am not an American citizen, but just someone who has always looked west to that great country with its breathtaking beauty its innovative people and, even with all of its faults a bastion of democracy.

Paul, how do you know that all of the preparation's fine when you haven't been near a polling station since the pandemic started ...?

Paul Walters Yep. I had noticed a definite behavioral slide with those folks after 2010. I chalked it up to them toughening up. When I explored the TPP [negotiated in secret for 6 years by Obama while Trudeau did the same with CETA], I was appalled. It was 13% trade and 87% corporate giveaways. I feared lollipop man [his hair looks lollipoppish] but was appalled at what the blue folks had done. I was [as of yet] unfamiliar with Edward Bernays so I did what I'd always done. Most people still have no idea what is happening. You've got time, Paul. Do some research.

Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen Brand Ambassador @ beBee Thanks for that reminder about the Frank-Dodd Act signed into law by our former President (Most congressional support for Dodd-Frank came from members of the Democratic Party) Tasked with these warm & fuzzy sounding "Consumer Protection" responsibilities "Consumer Financial Protection Bureau" "Financial Stability Oversight Council" The Dodd-Frank Act. The law states that a U.S. bank may take its depositors' funds (i.e. your checking, savings, CD's, IRA & 401(k) accounts) and use those funds when necessary to keep itself, the bank, afloat. Instead of that bank going bankrupt and the bank's assets sold off to be given back to its depositors…Mar 18, 2020 https://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/dodd-frank-financial-regulatory-reform-bill.asp https://www.theepochtimes.com/how-dodd-frank-made-it-legal-for-banks-to-confiscate-funds-during-a-banking-crisis_3097779.html https://www.fdic.gov/news/press-releases/2020/pr20037a.pdf Be assured: the "charlatan" will resurface in the "Great Reset"

He did a few things--he changed Dodd-Frank, our banking protections. Now when we deposit our money in a bank, that money becomes the property of that bank. We become unsecured creditors. If the bank chooses to declare problems big enough, it can institute a Bail-In--the confiscation of depositor funds to pay its own debts [no more bail-outs]. Even safety deposit boxes are not safe. They can crack those open and take the contents whenever they want. The depositor gets a scrap of paper showing they own shares in a failing bank--bye-bye FDIC. I voted for the guy twice. I had no idea he was such a charlatan Some of the things he did I don't even want to come close to believing. But I do--I have to...

Paul Walters The blossom collector ... a lovely weave. Yes: Historic numbers of people voted https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/elections/voter-turnout/ But & however ... preceding the election why were hundreds of rules changed - even pushed through without legislative process ( in numerous states) to alter voting processes & promote - even PUSH people to vote by mailing in ballots (I personally received NUMEROUS unsolicited applications for mail in ballot) (I can describe the changes here in PA but I won't bore the readers here/PA has a history of corruption regarding voting processes) I would like to think that "honest votes" were all that were cast but I would bet my life that is NOT true. The fracture lines run deep in the US. And much energy is spent defending the turf within the fracture lines at the expense of the whole. Trump as the effective Disruptor has in many ways converted fracture lines into divides. I believe that to make America great again will require the application of the Spirit of the Constitution not merely the cold print. The US needs to once and for all confront its demons. Reconciliation across the divides requires the language of non-judgmental, non-disparaging dialogue. This should be driven by the collective aspiration of ensuring that all have equal opportunity with reward apportioned to value contribution. Practically this should be mediated by forums at county, city and state levels where the contract with the people needs to be re-instated based on the fundamentals of the Constitution - Equal opportunity, access to education, healthcare and security but with reward based on value contribution. Finally, they who derive personal gratification from thwarting or destroying the rights and properties of law-abiding souls committed to the enhancement of self and of the whole should be appropriately dealt with.

Spot on, Jerry 👍 After all the excitement of the last few days, my faith in mankind is almost rekindled. Let's hope that democracy is the winner here, along with a focus on improving the lots of our brothers and sisters and taking care of the environment we live in, and that political BS and self interest are the loosers. Looking forward to the reconstruction of the old international alliances again. What we all need now is leadership and a collective will to improve, rather than political shenanigans that inevitably fuel the old adage that "politicians and nappies [diapers in your land] should be changed regularly ... and for the same reason."

THE REST In my humble opinion, Trump won the first time around by focusing on a single idea: "Make America Great Again". It focused supporters on the time in their lives when everything was going their way. But those folks desires could not be obtained without the leadership to make it happen. The vision could not be realized because it was a figment of imagination spun up by a master manipulator. American voters repudiated Trump because he didn't deliver. But they did not abandon the vision they had for the country. Biden's hope is to bring all Americans to see that supporters on both sides have essentially the same vision. T. Just as in an emergency, color doesn't matter. Religion doesn't matter. Politics doesn't matter. What matters is helping each other. Joe will be on TV tonight. I can guarantee that will be the essence of his message. I hope all Americans listen.

Paul, I live here. i watched the last 4 years unfold and was amazed at the lack of logic, concern and leadership. Like millions of others this week i rose each day to see the latest counts. As of today, the American Electorate has spoken. More men and women voted in this election than ever before in our history. The winner was elected with a larger percentage of the vote of all time. But the loser also had one of he largest turnouts of all time. It appears that the electorate chose to send Agent Orange to the showers but maintain and even expand the down ticket offices in Republican hands. And therein lies the beauty of a country ruled by law. Our people know that this is not a dictatorship and that even the best laid plans of the winners must be vetted and financed by the legislature. Whether we want it or not we are very close to an even match in both chambers. That forces the government to find compromises. It pushes us to a centrist course. The fears of being controlled by socialists become unfounded. The concerns about a government of far right conservatives are swept aside by the people that actually win office. MORE

I would offer you a challenge. What is it that you would give to the “oppressed” community, no mater how identified, that would make them happy? Consider your network and would it be OK for you to walk to their home and ask for some percentage of their wealth because you feel oppressed? What Biden is proposing is he will ask for you. Well how much is oppression worth? How do we decide when one is not oppressed anymore? Where is that line? You see Biden offers something that in reality can not be given. I would love to live in a world that oppression didnt exist. Given the billions who live on the planet, the politicians that want power and those who can benefit from them getting it, oppression will merely change identity groups. Its all coming to your group eventually. Would we build for them a community to which we pay for, give them a stipend each week and for how long? (America has already tried this, see Pres. Johnsons war on poverty.) All the saber rattling, riots and protests only offer anger. No solution. Do we really believe that Biden or “not Trump” is a solution? Biden wishes to play Robinhood by giving money to the “oppressed”. Inverting the cultural pyramid. The pyramid needs work as with all forms of government. Stalin, Hitler and now Venezuela all tried this, can we not see that the Pyramid only reforms with the elite at the top. Citizens always get squashed. Group think is a dish best served cold. I know the deep end of the pool is scary. But i can promise, once there you will see the world from opportunity rather than outcome.

The fact that 43% of the American population still believe Trump reveals an interesting psychology, Paul, one I've thought about endlessly—and hopelessly—over the past week. Here's what I've determined: This is a "What's in it for me?" country which, in the old days, resulted in phrases like "A chicken in every pot," and "For a hamburger today, I'll gladly pay you Tuesday." If men are "led by their stomachs," then it's safe to assume America is still let by men. We need more women in politics, Paul, just to get our silly minds off our stomachs. I know this sounds ironic, since most of us (men) can't cook worth shite, but we won't solve our own ignorance by eating. This election has proven that the American mind is a "deep-fried, double-wide version of the man I was before" I'm quoting a wonderful American ditty called "I Don't Look Good Naked Anymore," which is really about stomachs, and Americans are proud of them. Show me a big stomach and I'll show you a Trumpist. Food Over Fundamentals is the rallying cry, which is weird and confusing since food is fundamental to the American psyche, and Trump could have won this election by ordering six million Big Macs and throwing them out of helicopters. Americans may not know the current national debt, but they know a Big Mac. Nobody votes on an empty stomach in America, Paul. "Feed them and they will come" should have been Trump's motto, that or "Make America Deep-Fried Again." That's what inspires, Paul. That and antacid.

Hate is a luxury. When media is the driver of a hate narrative it becomes lazy. Once something is hated they nor i have to observe nor concern myself with personal accountability. Just hate and vote for everything against that which i hate. No need to consider the insurmountable amount of data myself, just ride with the herd. Amazingly the herd never learns their lessons. While politics feeds on those they oppose and you agree, you cant see your own name on the menu of the consumed. The history of this and the philosophy of social constructs spell clearly the future of any Republic where Biden wins. Self determination with all its flaws is still better than the political elite determining my destiny. Give me an asshole like Trump over tyranny of elitist rule. Not my preference. The irony is that all those who have “woke” believe they have the better answer in lieu of the Constitution. Since Roosevelt the more perfect union is being redefined into the more perfect Administrative Government. Trump was created by the citizens. The democrats came from behind cover and exposed their agenda. Trump was spawned. The election demonstrates the divided nation we are. One side wishes government to intervene and change the outcomes of data sets while the other wishes only for the opportunity to change their dataset label. This is the difference between our constitution and socialism. America has lost the war on poverty, drugs, healthcare and crime to name just a few. These were wars fought on the grounds of Government can actually fix something. Citizens can not be changed by edict. If not stopped by whatever means necessary we will all wake to a new paradigm of government controlled everything. We are very close now.

Harvey Lloyd

Your last line concerning “democracy” was where i believe you should spend some time researching. Democracy is an idea that is backed up by some form of a constitution. In America our constitution defines what democracy is and how this ideal gets applied. The most important parts of this document is the. Declaration of Independence which describes the goals of democracy while the Bill of Rights expresses the rights of those who participate. Our forefathers fought in chambers, under threat of death in some cases, to form a “More perfect union...” I have educated myself on such matters in an effort to understand the political landscape of the various candidates. Sir Trump and his aggressive, self brandishing language is not something i am accustomed. We all endure with assholes frequently. But for all the character flaws Trump has, Biden terrifies me. His party, along with the emergence of socialist styled politicos, demonstrates the effective move away from Constitutional values. Trump has not hidden from his agenda nor has Biden, both are plainly out in the public declaring their intentions. Once we look past the lack of decorum and investigate through the lens of the constitution, Biden and his democrats wish to control the population through legislative authority. The media has done a good job of keeping folks focused on the dogmatic character assassination while socialism is inching its way forward.

And maybe pigs will fly, Mr Walters. I just heard old Joe talk a couple of hours ago and he sounded like a true leader, instead of the self propagating bumptious buffoon he will, hopefully, replace. I am concerned, however, that Biden will have difficulty doing what needs to be done, both in the US and worldwide, if the Democrats don’t have control of the Senate. At any rate things can’t be worse than the last four years.
